Back on Feb. 18, I told you all that Dolly Parton was going to get a second honorary doctorate Degree. This one would come from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The university is not too far from Dolly’s birth place in Sevier County.
On Friday, May 8, Dolly picked up her Degree at UT (Photo form UT’s web site.) She also sang to the newly graduated students, and later Friday night she was in Pigeon Forge to ride in the annual Dollywood parade on the parkway.
I’ve been to the parade in past years. Would have loved to go down this year, but it just wasn’t possible. This photo is from a past parade, and is some of the cast from the attraction Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge. It’s one of Dolly’s establishments. It’s a really fun place – it’s a dinner theater. Sort of. Well, you get dinner – and the theater includes horses, riders, and even a little comedy and audience participation.
I live just 90 minutes or so from Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Whenever I have a Saturday, with no definite plans, that’s one of the places I like to go. There are a lot of things to do there, that don’t all cost a lot of money. So, while I didn’t get to see Dolly’s parade last night, there’s always a chance I could end up down there sometime today.
Dolly has a lot going on these days. In addition to “9 to 5” playing on Broadway, full of songs she wrote, she also has Sha-Kon-O-Hey, opening at Dollywood today. Sha-Kon-O-Hey is a stage show. The word means “Land of Blue Smoke”, and the show is being described as “a show as big as the Great Smoky Mountains”. Dolly’s web site says it “captures the spirit of the Smoky Mountains and the rich heritage of the people who call them home.” It’s a 45 minute show that takes audiences back to the 1930s.
Before I head out of here and get my Saturday started, Here’s the video of Dolly’s performance at UT on Friday.
I’ll talk to you all later. Let’s go out and have a super Saturday. Don’t forget to pick up a card for Mom. I hope all of you live close enough to your Mom to take her out for a great Mother’s Day dinner tomorrow.
