Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. But since today is Saturday, it seemed like the perfect time to start celebrating. This afternoon I took a little trip up to WXBQ radio in Bristol, Va., to drop off holiday treats for the guys.
Steve Stroud was on the air when I got there, around 3:30 p.m. Steve is one half of our very comical Morning Air Show, which is weekday mornings from 6-10 a.m. The other half of that team is Richard Quillen.
Even though Steve was the only one I got to visit with today, that doesn’t mean all my other favorite deejays won’t get their Valentine candy bags. I left them all with Steve, and I’m sure he won’t eat everything before the other guys get in the studio to pick up theirs.
Reggie Neel follows Richard and Steve weekdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Reggie has been part of the WXBQ air staff for a very long time. As well as playing today’s hits and some of country’s classics, he always tries to keep his listeners informed and up to date with what’s going on in the world of country music.
After Reggie, we get the one and only Marc Tragler. You can hear Tragler every weekday from 3-8 m. This one has a pretty unbelievable resume for a radio host. He’s a chef, he’s a former actor, and he’s a real nut! Fans get to hang out with Tragler at the Appalachian Fair every August. He’s just a real fun kid.
Marcus Brooks brings us our nighttime fun. He follows Tagler in at 8 p.m., and sits with us until midnight. Marcus is from East Tennessee, and graduated from East Tennessee State University – that’s where Kenny Chesney went to school, too. I think you guys will like Marcus so while you’re sitting at your computer playing games or answering e-mail at night, be sure to listen to his show.
Matthew James rounds out the on-air staff for WXBQ. He is on weekdays from midnight until 6 a.m. That is a shift I would not like at all. But Matthew is a real pro, and he knows how to entertainer his listeners no matter what time of day or night. Now all of you insomniacs know where to find someone to spend your sleepless nights with.
While he doesn’t have a voice you’ll ever hear on the radio, our famous WXBQ Rabbit is always the star of the show at area remotes, fairs, concerts, and anywhere else his radio people take him. And I happen to know for a fact that this rabbit has a sweet tooth, so he was not left out of the Valentine candy delivery this afternoon.
Another reason I enjoy visiting the radio station is to see what new things are hanging on the walls since my last visit! Today when I was there, I found these photos on the walls. The Steel Magnolia one is new. It was autographed by the duo and left at the station after their recent visit. “The Whole Experience” poster above was autographed by Big Kenny. Some of the other photos are new, too. But I wanted to share all of them with you.
Now that I’ve said Happy Valentine’s Day to all my friends at WXBQ, let me send out a huge HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY to each of you!
That’s all for now. More later! You guys have a good rest of your evening. Talk to you tomorrow!
