I’m a long-time fan of the legendary group, Alabama. I was fortunate enough to see these guys in concert twice – at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, and at Viking Hall in Bristol, Tenn. Those concerts feel like a lifetime ago. It was back in the 1980s. I got to meet them at the Bristol show – they signed my hat.
I remember watching their performance, thinking about groups from the 50s. You know, like Danny and the Juniors, and Dion and the Belmonts … and thinking – “they really should have named their group – Randy and the Alabamians” (or something). Because it was pretty much the Randy Owen show.
I’m not complaining about that. It was a great blend of instrumentalists and vocals. It was just that Randy seemed more like the lead singer than ‘just one of the group.’
Randy continues to take the lead, as he recently kicked off Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon Seminar. This year, more than 800 artists, label representatives, radio station personnel and executives will continue the Country Care’s legacy by attending Country Cares for St. Jude Kids radiothons seminar at St. Jude in Memphis, Tenn. Now in its 22nd year, Country Cares is one of the nation’s largest radio fundraising programs, having generated more than $385 million for St. Jude since it began in 1989. [Source]
Randy told this little story about another St. Jude supporter, Brad Paisley: "The other day Brad Paisley called and wanted me to come over with my guitar. I got there and there’s a car in the driveway with a St. Jude tag and so, of course, I had to go in and ask whose car has the St. Jude tag. And Brad said, ‘It’s mine.’"
Owen said that he hoped the country artists there would keep supporting St. Jude. "Please take this back with you, back to your families and let St. Jude be a part of your lives." [Source]
