American Idol is behind us for this season, and now it’s time to watch the Top 10 and see what they are doing. We all know about the Idol Tour, even though It won’t be coming anywhere near my neighborhood. And we will be hearing about who gets a record deal, and if any of them end up on Broadway (it seems someone always does).
But the Idols of interest to country music fans are Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina. On Friday, June 10, Scotty and Lauren sang at the Grand Ole Opry. Lauren sang “Blue”, the LeAnn Rimes hit. “I could cry right now. I cannot believe I am here in front of all of you,” she told the sold out crowd “I’ve dreamed of this day since I was about this tall, as tall as my heels! I never get nervous singing, and my knees are shaking.”
She finished her set with “Like My Mother Does,” which is her debut single. She dedicated the song to her mom, who was watching the show from backstage. One of our local deejays recently posted on his facebook (WXBQ Morning Air Show) page: “From Steve..Just heard the studio single release of Lauren Alaina’s "Like My Mother Does". WOW! I’ve never heard her sing like she does on this. Fantastic vocal. I hope radio gives this one a chance.”
Scotty opened his set with his first single, “I Love You This Big.” He finished out with George Strait’s “Check Yes or No.” Scotty shared with his audience that hit was an honor to be there, and said that just a few months ago he was bagging groceries. “I owe all my success to you,” he told the audience.
After the performances, they were given prints commemorating their debut at the Grand Ole Opry. They were also given the shirts they wore in the City of Hope Celebrity Softball game on Saturday, June 11.
American Idol, like many other tv talent shows, has opened the door for a lot of young artists. But once they get that door open, it’s up to them to keep it open. There is a lot of talent out there right now. And I wish all of these young artists the very best. I know I’ll be keeping my eye on these two.
I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday – and Dads, Happy Father’s Day to all of you!
