The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is coming to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center on Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m. “Often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in country rock and American roots music,” says Darrell Bryan, NPAC’s General Manager, “ the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has a wide range in their catalog that will please musicians and music lovers of many ages and styles.”
Earlier this year, more than two decades after its release, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s No. 1 hit single, “Fishin’ in the Dark,” still set records. The classic song was certified GOLD for digital sales of more than 500,000 copies.

“Fishin’ in the Dark” seems to have a life of its own and has certainly become a signature song for us over the years,” said band member singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna. “We love that this song has become a summer anthem and continues to appeal to new audiences year after year.” Other band members include drummer Jimmie Fadden, keyboardist Bob Carpenter, and multi-instrumentalist John McEuen.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has had chart success on the Top 40 as well as the country charts over the decades. Their version of the song “Mr. Bojangles” in 1970 reached the Top 10, then later in the ‘70s had more success in the Top 20 with “American Dream” and “Make A Little Magic.” In the ‘80s, chart success came on the country chart with three No. 1 Hits “Long Hard Road” (The Sharecropper’s Dream), “Modern Day Romance,” and “Fishin In the Dark.”
Beyond the hits, one of their greatest triumphs is the three-volume series “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” that paired the band with many of Nashville’s veteran hierarchy including Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash and Earl Scruggs. The different sessions produced award-winning renditions of classic country and southern gospel standards.
