It’s been 32 years since Loretta Lynn’s book, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” opened in movie theaters all over the world. Sissy Spacek won the oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Loretta in that film. While Sissy was preparing for her role, she sang on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry with Loretta.
Now, Loretta is back on the stage at the Ryman Auditorium, with Zooey Deschannel. Zooey will be playing the role of Loretta in the Broadway production of the musical, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Many of you probably recognize Zooey from her television show “New Girl.” I never watched the show, although I do kow who Zooey is. I didn’t know she could sing.
The stage version of Coal Miner’s Daughter will be a lot like the movie – as it tells the story of Loretta from her very poor upbringing in Kentucky, all the way to her gaining the title of the First Lady of Country Music.
I love Loretta’s music, and the whole era of country music she represents. I’ve seen her in concert and recently got to go to a show her sister, Crystal Gayle, put on in Greeneville, Tenn. Dolly Parton’s Broadway musical, “Nine to Five” is currently playing at our Barter Theater in Abingdon, Va. Perhaps one day that is al the farther I will have to drive to see Broadway’s version of Coal Miner’s Daughter.
