I’m not one of those people who was blessed with a singing voice the world would want to listen to. I definitely don’t have the talent someone needs to lay their every day experiences out in words, and then set them to music. But fortunately for people like me, there are people who can. The people who can sing, and the people who can write the songs for those who do.
I always know when I’ve found one of those people. I know it when I head to their web site and listen to their music – over, and over, and over. That happened when I found Matt VanFossen. It’s a name I am probably not even pronouncing correctly, but it is also a name I’m not likely to forget. Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks that way. Jim Elliott, from WOVK Radio feels the same way about Matt. “Remember this guy’s name because you’ll be hearing a lot more of it in the future,” Elliott said.
Matt’s CD, which is available on iTunes, is titled “I Didn’t Come Here to Lose.” I don’t think that’s going to be a problem for Matt. I’ve listened to the songs, and I would put any one of them out on country radio today. My personal favorite is “As She Walked Away.” I’m not sure why. There’s something almost calming about Matt’s voice. This is one of those ‘had someone, lost someone’ kind of love songs. And it’s believable. …. ‘it still feels like it did that day, the day she walked away. If she walks back through that door tonight, This time I’ll let go of my pride, and hold her like I never have before. I’d be a better man than I’ve ever been if I could only have her back again…No one else could love her more….’ What a great song. The lyrics, the melody, and the delivery.
“As She Walked Away” is joined by six others on this album- “Almost Stopped Dreaming,” “A Woman’s Words,” “Leave Me,” “This Time Around,” “After You,” and “I Didn’t Come Here to Lose.”
I did discover rather quickly that while Matt can sing anything, I like his slower stuff much better. I can see him doing something like the upbeat “A Woman’s Words” in a party atmosphere. And I know it would go over great at a show – because the crowd would be jumping around and singing along. But personally, I liked the slower ones much better.
“Time Ain’t What it Used To Be” is one of the songs on his facebook page. It’s upbeat, and it’s good, and I’m not sure why it isn’t part of the album, “I Didn’t Come Here to Lose.” It should have been. “After You,” which is on the album, is one of those songs that really deserves a spot on country radio – right now. It’s a good song, it’s a memorable song, and of course Matt does a great job with the vocals.
I listened to “Leave Me” four times…in a row, and I’m probably going to play it again. The song was written by Perry Smith, Nashville songwriter. Matt said it’s his favorite – so I’m in good company. But, I bet I’ve listened to it even more than Matt has. You talk about a song that paints a picture – this one does. It is beautiful – very well written. I think I just changed my mind – “Leave Me” has moved into the top spot on my ‘Favorite Matt VanFossen Songs’ list.
This album is going to cover ever emotion you have. Before it was done, I was sad, I was happy, I even laughed a little. And I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. Matt may be from the north, but this Ohio native definitely knows what country music is supposed to sound like. He has a uniqueness to his voice that makes him easy to listen to – and even easier to remember.
We all know Tracy Byrd has his “Byrd Watchers” and Eric Church has his “Church Choir”… you can now add to that the VanFan, and I have a feeling there will be many of those! The customer reviews on iTunes say it better than I can. Here are just a few of those reviews:
“After you" is one of those songs thats about heartbreak but it has an upbeat feel to it, Its makes you feel the passion behind a romance but you can almost feel the anger in not being able to get over the person he is trying so hard to forget but ur pulling for him to push thru it and move on.
"Almost Stopped Dreaming" This song is song that reminds you that even when you believe you will never love again that it is possible and that sometimes mountains move all on there own.
"She walked away" is the song that most people have lived, when you have lost someone that your heart still yells out for, the one that there are so many things that you left unsaid, you can hear the feeling in Matts voice and its almost like he is singing it for you.
All in All Matt’s album is worth your money. If you’re in the mood for a heartbreak song, an inspirational song or one that gets you move your feet (or throw your head back laughing) This is a must have for all country fans. I cant wait to hear more! I believe one day people will be filling stadiums to hear him sing!
That’s my little introduction of Matt VanFossen. I hope you will all check out his music, and let me know what you think!
Back with more soon!
