Stoney Creek Records’ act Thompson Square successfully defended its crown last night when the husband/wife duo, comprised of Keifer and Shawna Thompson, took home the ACM’s “Vocal Duo of the Year” Award for the 2nd consecutive year.
Thompson Square’s win was met by a standing ovation from the duo’s peers and music industry – including congratulations from headlining tour mate and ACM co-host Luke Bryan – when Keifer and Shawna Thompson picked up the Academy of Country Music’s first big award of the night.
“I just can’t believe the reality we’re living right now and I truly can’t believe this is our life,” Keifer Thompson told media during the ACM’s backstage press conference. “We never thought we would do anything like this, especially win it twice.”
When asked about how it felt to win the ACM two years in a row, Keifer Thompson replied, “It’s kind of hard to put into words but….”
“…It just feels good!” both Keifer and Shawna Thompson said in unison embodying the message of their newly released and autobiographical album, Just Feels Good.
“I think Johnny and June. . . the love they had for one another. . .I feel like we have that same thing,” said Keifer in response to questions regarding the duo’s 14-year marriage as well as the vocal duos that have inspired them as both a romantic and professional couple. “When you just look at one of them and see how they look at the other one – that’s how I look at Shawna and that’s how I feel about her. . .the love aspect of what we do, it’s there.”
The duo’s second ACM win in a row cements Thompson Square’s status as a force to be reckoned with in the Country music industry. Along with its two ACM wins, the twice GRAMMY nominated Thompson Square is also the reigning CMA “Vocal Duo of the Year” and was awarded a 2012 CMT Music Award for the hit “I Got You” as well as three American Country Awards.
Thompson Square’s second ACM victory comes on the heels of the release of the duo’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Just Feels Good, which became the duo’s highest-selling album debut to-date this past week. The album’s lead single, “If I Didn’t Have You,” also soared into the Top 5 at Country Radio last week and was on the verge of crossing the GOLD sales mark at press time.

Country music’s biggest breakout act of the last 2 years, husband and wife duo Thompson Square pounded the pavement for 15 years in the music industry before landing a record deal with Benny Brown’s small independent label Stoney Creek Records (sister label to indie Broken Bow Records and home to Jason Aldean). Since that day, Thompson Square has earned over 25 awards show nominations – including 2 GRAMMY as well as American Music Award and Teen Choice Award nods – and made music history when it was awarded awards from both the ACM and CMA for “Vocal Duo of the Year” in 2012.
Thompson Square’s breakthrough hit “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” is nearing Double Platinum sales status, was the #1 Digital Soundscan Single for 5 weeks straight, the #1 Country Ringtone for 12 consecutive weeks and was iTunes 2011 Country Song of the Year. Thompson Square’s whirlwind 2011-2012 saw them on national tours supporting Jason Aldean and Lady Antebellum as well as gracing the stages of The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS This Morning, Conan, Fox & Friends, FOX’s All American Concert Series, the 45th Annual CMA Awards, CMT’s Artists of the Year special and the MTV/VH1/CMT “Best of 2012” concert celebration. Thompson Square ended 2011 as Billboard’s #1 New Country Artist in terms of digital sales and the #6 New Artist across all genres. Follow-up hits include the award winning infectious, “I Got You,” (#6) and the critically-lauded power ballad, “Glass” (#15). The duo’s latest smash, the Top 5 “If I Didn’t Have You,” marked Thompson Square’s highest first-week sales of its career and is quickly approaching the GOLD sales mark.
The duo is currently touring with Luke Bryan on his Dirt Road Diaries Tour through October 2013.
