For the past several months, we have been listening to the EP, Perfect Excuses, from Andalyn. I suppose I could use a good excuse for not getting an article posted about this young lady sooner. But, we all know what they say about good intentions….
This past August, we were able to watch her perform on stage, as part of Joe Lasher Jr.’s band. They opened for Cole Swindell at the Appalachian Fair in Gray, Tenn. She was fun to watch, as she played guitar and helped out with back-up vocals throughout Joe’s show. To watch her perform, you would never guess she was still a teen. She knew her way around a stage, and it was obvious she was having a great time entertaining the crowd. We liked what we saw in August, and were really anxious to hear this debut EP from this up-and-coming artist.
ReverbNation lists her genre as Country/Southern Rock/Americana. I think I can agree with that. Her music is not really what could be referred to as “Today’s Country”, and it definitely isn’t “Pop”. I wouldn’t put her music in the same category as Jana Kramer, Kelsea Ballerini or the sounds that we get from male artists like Luke Bryan or Hunter Hayes. Andalyn is more country than that. But, it’s not quite ‘classic country’ either. When you listen to her, you aren’t going to be reminded of Tammy Wynette, Jeannie Seeley or Dottie West. But, I think that’s a good thing. Andalyn has her sound, and it is a sound people are going to remember once they hear it.
The songs you will find on the EP are “Carolina Summer”, “My Best Friend” and “Not Enough”, all written by Steve and Brian Butler; along with Black and Blue Mascara and Perfect Excuses, where Andalyn joined Steve and Brian in the writing department.
There is nothing about this EP that will make you not want to listen. All of the songs fall into the area of medium to up tempo, with “Carolina Summer” having what I would consider the most catchy melody. “Black and Blue Mascara” was really my favorite song on the EP. More than the other four, this was the one of the five that made me want to really pay attention to the lyrics. I felt a story coming when I listened. It also seemed like the one that would best fit into the play list at most country radio stations these days. “My Best Friend” also sounds like it would be among our radio program director’s pick for a spin or two.
If you like your music loud, you will probably want to turn up the volume when “Not Enough” starts. It’s just that kind of song. Great percussion, great guitar, and of course, great vocals from Andalyn. This is one where you definitely hear the ‘rock’ side of her country/rock sound. The title track, “Perfect Excuses” is the one I found myself wanting to listen to more often than the others, though. I played it until I was singing it. And, yet – it isn’t really one of those songs you usually find yourself singing along with (like “People are Crazy,” “I’m Pretty Good at Drinking Beer” or even “Chicken Fried”). It is memorable, however. And, it’s a really good song. I don’t know how much Andalyn contributed to the writing of this one, but it is good.
