Last week was a sad one for all country music fans. We had all joined Rory Feek as he wrote in his blog so often, to keep us all up-to-date on how Joey was doing with her battle against cancer. And, last Saturday, Rory shared the news that Joey left us all on Friday, and went to her new home in Heaven. We are always a little sad when the entertainment world loses someone we had been watching for a long time. But, this one bothered me more than most. It was young woman. A young mother. A beautiful, talented woman who seemed to touch all of us in some personal way.
While the loss of Joey Martin Feek leaves an emptiness in many fans, her family and friends in Alexandria, Ind., are planning not only to honor her, but to include as many of her friends, family and fans that can make the journey to a public memorial service, which will be held on Sunday, March 13. The service will be held at Alexandria-Monroe High School gymnasium, and will be officiated by Pastor Jerry Young and Mike Owens of Owens Memorial Service in Alexandria. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. Bill and Gloria Gaither will be hosting the service. Many of you now that these two are long time friends of the family. Rory mentioned them often when he wrote about Joey’s battle with her cancer.
Back in November, Bill and Gloria Gaither were among the hundreds of Alexandria fans who lined the streets for a prayer vigil for Joey. Joey’s home town was always supportive and offered encouragement to the Martin and Feek families over the years, and throughout Joey’s cancer treatments.
Joey lived in Alexandra until 1998, when she moved to Nashville. She and Rory were married in 2002. We have been fans of this duo from the first time we saw them. She left us music. Music that we will be listening to for a very long time.We have written many articles about Joey and Rory over the years. We tried not to write too many as her illness grew worse. But, we are so thankful that Rory stayed strong, and was able to keep writing his blog to let all of us know how she was, and how they were handling this trial in their lives.
If it were possible, I would be among those who cared. I would be among those at the Memorial Service in Alexandria,Ind., on Sunday. And, I sure many of you will be there. The photos posted in this article were used in many of our articles over the years.
Continue to keep this family in prayer. Continue to listen to that beautiful voice, and never forget Joey Martin Feek. The album, Joey + Rory, Hymns That Are Important to Us is wonderful. This needs to be part of everyone’s CD collection.
