20170915_081701I had a little conflict on Thursday night, and could not personally attend Dylan Scott’s show at the Washington County Fair in Abingdon, Va.  Fortunately, we did have a Country’s Chatter staff writer available, as well as one of the best concert photographers anyone could ever hope to work with, Beverly Campbell Hood. Thanks to Jennifer for the article and some of the photos below.  And, special thanks to Beverly for providing photos for us again as well.

This past Thursday night (Sept. 14), I attended the Dylan Scott concert at the Washington County Fair in Abingdon, VA. This was my first time seeing Dylan Scott perform, and I must admit I was not too familiar with him. Of course. I had heard his debut No. 1 single, “My Girl,” on the radio. However, I had no idea what to expect with what kind of show he would put on….let’s just say, at the end of the night I was not disappointed! Let me begin by sharing with you what I learned about Dylan during his performance

Dylan Scott is 26 years old and originally from Louisiana, or as he put it a “redneck 90’s baby from Louisiana”. He moved to Nashville when he was 19 to pursue his music career and has lived there since. In December 2015 he proposed to his high school sweetheart, whom he had been dating since he was 15 years old, and 5 months later they were married. It is obvious that he is very much in love with her, and as you can guess the inspiration for most of his songs is her. His wife, Blair, is currently pregnant with their first child, a baby boy.

Before the show began I had the opportunity to participate in his meet & greet. I knew from the moment that I met him it was going to be an amazing show! He was very welcoming to everyone backstage and seemed to thoroughly enjoy getting the opportunity to meet fans. Not only did we get to have our picture made with him but he also took the time to talk with us, and he made a point to sign anything the fans asked him to, including shirts, CDs, and even a guitar.

At 8pm Dylan and his band took the stage running. They started the show out with his song “My Town”. He followed that up with songs like “Ball Cap”, “Hooked”, and “Beer Buddies”. For the next hour we had the chance to hear him sing and to really get to know him as he talked about his journey in the music industry, and on a more personal note as he shared stories about him and his wife. It was so enjoyable to see a musician not only come out to perform but to also take the time to build relationships with their fans by opening up and interacting with them.

For me, one of the most memorable parts of the show was when Dylan slowed things down and interacted with the fans. As he pulled up a stool and starting playing his guitar he took us back by performing some “oldies” acoustic style. Some of those songs were “Fishing in the Dark”, George Strait’s “Check Yes or No”, David Lee Murphy’s “Dust on the Bottle”, and one by his hero Keith Whitely, “When You Say Nothing at All”. He even took a request from a 6 year old fan during the meet & greet and threw in a little Justin Bieber. During the acoustic performance he did have trouble getting the guitar tuned and had to call for a little help from his lead guitarist Logan, who is also his brother. However that did not slow him down in the least. The show went on!

As Dylan spoke about his wife, and talked to the guys and girls in the audience about love and relationships he performed his songs “Passenger Seat”, “Crazy Over Me”, and “Can’t Take her Anywhere”. As you know his music is more contemporary but it still has its country roots. Even though he had a little fun kidding some of the fans about their accents Dylan is still a good ole country boy, skinny jeans and all! Apparently skinny jeans are a new thing for him as he asked us to not judge him on those…..his wife was the one to buy those for him and as any man knows “It makes for a much easier life when the wife is happy.”

Country fairs offer all types of attractions, good food, good music, and exciting things. During the performance some of the attendees had purchased a light up toy that would shoot up in the air (to give you a visual it reminded you of a glowing UFO ship), which of course got Dylan’s attention and he expressed great interest in wanting one. So during the show one of the fans went and bought him one, which he accepted appreciatively. You could tell that he was truly touched that a fan had taken the time to go and purchase him one. It is very heartwarming to see musicians truly grateful for the time, gifts, and support that their fans give them.

BH 11Dylan finished out the night by performing his #1 single “My Girl”. Yep, you guessed it, his wife was the whole motivation behind the writing to this song. Before they were married he would travel from Nashville to Louisiana on Friday and Saturday nights whenever he could and they would spend the evening “just riding around in the truck”. During one of these night rides she was flipping through the radio and stopped on an Eminem song. According to Dylan his wife is very shy so to hear her rapping out about “mom’s spaghetti” was one of those moments that only he gets to witness of his wife. You could tell this was still a very fond memory for him. So once back in Nashville he began writing “My Girl” about his girl.

In summary I will say despite the worry of rain, and despite the cool air, I am very glad that I went to see Dylan Scott in concert. He is an amazing singer who puts on a fantastic show! On top of that I can also honestly say that Dylan had just a good of time as the fans did. He mentioned more than once that to have the chance to come out and put on a good show while getting to set back, relax, and hang out with the fans was quite enjoyable.   If you have the opportunity to attend a Dylan Scott concert I would highly recommend that you don’t let that chance pass you by!
