Dolly Parton is going to get a second honorary doctorate degree. This one will be given to her by The University of Tennessee. Dolly is a Sevier County, Tenn., native, and will receive the doctorate of humane and musical letters during the May 8, 2009, commencement ceremony. I’m not much of a fan of sitting through long, boring graduation ceremonies, but this one might be fun. Before she can receive her doctorate, it has to be approved by the UT Board of Trustees at their Feb. 26 meeting in Memphis.
Dolly received her first honorary doctorate from Carson-Newman College in 1990 for her commitment to education in Appalachia.
She has written more than 3,000 songs during her 50 year career. This is probably my favorite. It’s from a performance she did on the television show Hee Haw, 35 years ago! Now, tell me the truth, doesn’t she look even better now than she did then.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Sevier County, it’s in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. Sevierville is right next to Pigeon Forge, and Pigeon Forge is where Dolly has her theme park, Dollywood. In addition to the amusement park, with live shows, crafts and shops, Dolly also has Splash Country, a fantastic water park. And, she has Dixie Stampede, where you can eat a full course meal while watching a fantastic show.
That’s all for now. see you guys soon!
