I think the Academy of Country Music Awards show was really good this year. It must have been. Because that was the fastest three hours of my life. The show really kept moving … from start to finish. And it was all good.
The thing I liked the best was seeing Carrie Underwood pick up her Entertainer of the Year award. I really think she deserves it. She’s so talented. She’s turning into my female version of George Strait — by that I mean this…. George Strait has never done a song I don’t like. And so far, it’s the same with Carrie.
And, anyone who has been paying attention to the Tim McGraw drama knows that he was scheduled to perform at the show, but pulled out “due to a disagreement with show producers,” (his publicist said). That was his loss, as far as I’m concerned. I think everyone in country would have loved to have been a part of that show.
You can get all of the winners here. But I’ll give you the major ones, and then you can get some sleep (like I’m going to do).
Song of the Year, “In Color,” Jamey Johnson; Top vocal group, Rascal Flatts; Top New Artist, Julianne Hough (selected from the Top New Male Artist, Jake Owen, Top New Female Artist, Julianne; and Top New Group or Duo, Zac Brown Band); Taylor Swift received a Crystal Milestone Award, presented by the Academy in part because Taylor is helping bring young people back to country music (or brining country music back to young people, or something).
Sugarland took Top vocal duo; LeeAnn Rimes was this year’s recipient of the Humanitarian award; Brad Paisley, who is home waiting for his wife to give birth to their second child, picked up the award for Top Male Vocalist; and, in addition to her Entertainer of the Year award, Carrie Underwood was selected Top Female Vocalist.
Jennifer Nettles also got a Crystal Milestone Award. Her award was because she was the first female songwriter since 1973 to win the song of the year award (she did that in 2008). Single of the Year went to Trace Adkins for “You’re Gonna Miss This.” And Album of the year was Taylor Swift, “Fearless.”.
There’s a little bit of what when on tonight at the ACM Awards. And you can find the rest on the Academy of Country Music Awards web site.
That will do it for me. I’ll talk to you guys in the morning. It’s time for me to get some sleep. Write when you have a chance.
