Jessica Simpson, Tara Conner, Miley Cyrus, Brittney Spears’ little sister… and the list goes on and on. Now, it looks like we can add the name of Taylor Hicks to that group on the “I can’t make it anywhere else, so I’ll try my hand at country music” list.
Why do they keep doing that? I’ll admit, some of these “I was something before country” singers are really good. I love Darius Rucker, and I even like Jewel. But for the most part, this trying country just doesn’t work.
Taylor won American Idol a few years back. He was ok – he was entertaining, he was what you might expect to see (as Simon would say) on a cruise ship, in a Vegas lounge, or perhaps performing at a wedding reception.
I didn’t think he had a big future in the recording industry. He did manage to get to No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200, with his self-titled debut album. And, he did manage to sell more than a million copies. And his first single, “Do I Make You Proud,” was No. 1 on the Top 200, with two follow-up singles, “Just to Feel That Way,” and “Heaven Knows” reaching number 20 and 24 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart… but that was about it for Taylor.
He is no longer with Artisia Records, and his second studio album, “The Distance” was released in March on his own Modern Whomp Label.
And all that brings us to this… Taylor is getting ready to release his fifth single, “Seven Mile Breakdown” in May. The song is said to have a “country music flavor” and will be shipped to country radio stations.
Here’s Taylor, singing “Do I Make You Proud,” from season five of American Idol. I think I’ll have to wait to hear the country song before I make my final decision on Taylor Hicks going country.
That’s all for now – first one who sees a video out there for his new country single, ‘”Seven Mile Breakdown,” let me know. (Of course I mean the “official video” – you can find him singing “Seven Mile Breakdown” on YouTube). In fact, the first one of you who hears that song on the radio, let me know about that, too. I’m curious as to whether or not our local radio station will play it.
Talk to you all soon!
