As part of the White House Music Series, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, Adam Larkey, a local fiddler, has been invited to the White House to perform. Adam has quite a following. Not just in this area, but in Nashville, Virginia, and other areas as well.
He started playing fiddle when he was six, and began taking lessons from Scott Gould at the School of Music in Kingsport. His dad is a bluegrass musician, and started letting Adam play a few songs on stage with his band. From there, Adam’s bio on his web page says, “he took off.”
Adam was born and raised in Abingdon and Bristol, Va. He has appeared on WCYB TV’s Family Focus, CMT, BCMA’s Pickin’ Porch, and the Carter Family Fold, as well as many other bluegrass featured radio broadcasts. He has been honored to be a featured performer in Nashville, along side accomplished artists such as The Little River Band, Kim Karnes and Penny Gilley.
I’ve seen this kid at many local events, and like most people from this area, whenever we hear that Adam is going to be performing somewhere, we’re right there, too.
Adam, and the nine other area students traveling to Washington, D.C., will be part a workshop taught at the White House by Allison Krauss and Brad Paisley. In all, approximately 120 students from Tennessee, Virginia and Pennsylvania will be participating. On a local news cast, Adam said he was really excited to be going to Washington.
Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion and the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance are participating in the program by sending these 10 very talented middle and high school students to represent the Northeast Tennessee/Southwest Virginia area.
His band is Adam Larkey and Mountain Time, and is made up of members Eric Larkey, guitar; Joe Honeycutt, mandolin; Tim Decker, lead guitar; Josh Hamm, banjo; and Ken Williams, bassist.
Let’s show you a little of what I’ve been talking about, and why this very talented young musician was invited to be a part of the First Lady’s White House Music Series.
Time for me to head to work. I’ll talk to you all soon.
