I’ve been listening to country music for more than 50 years. I know what we’re hearing on the radio today is not what I grew up with. However, I also realize that country music has evolved. There are few artists like Bradley Gaskin (Mr. Bartender), and Jamey Johnson, who still sing the kind of country music I remember. Most of what we call country music today really is country-rock, or country-pop. And, I’m letting myself change with it. I still love the classic country music, and I still listen to it. But, I do like a lot of what I hear on the radio today.
A great example of that is Billy Currington’s new song, “Love Done Gone.” I’m not sure what classification of music that belongs in – it’s almost like New Orleans jazz or swing music. And I love all the horns at the end. Is there even a guitar in that song? I’m sure we don’t have a fiddle. Anyway, I like it – a lot. And country radio is playing it.
So before all the Carrie and Taylor fans decide to jump on me about this post – I am definitely not saying I don’t like Carrie and Taylor. I’m just agreeing with Rolling Stone magazine that these two (along with many other country artists) are more pop or rock than they are country.
Here is the full list from Rolling Stone Magazine, of their Top 16 Queens of Pop. Listed alphabetically: Adele, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, P!nk, Rihanna, Robyn, Shakira, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood.
Back to the office for me – after a great three-day weekend. I hope you all enjoyed your Forth of July celebrations!
