We have been following Moriah Domby on Twitter for quite a while now. But, it wasn’t until the Christmas break that we took some time to listen to her CD, “Winning Me Over”, and her self-titled EP. We noticed right away that this is a voice we weren’t going to get tired of any time soon. Moriah is one of those artists who can only be described as ‘fresh, new’ easy-to-listen to’ and just plain good.
Like so many of our up-and-coming country artists, Moriah started singing at church events, and went from there to a cross-country acoustic tour last year. The Oregon native has been singing, playing guitar and piano, and writing songs since she was very young. She got her first guitar when she was 7 years old. Her father plays guitar, her mother has a background in musical theater, and both have been an instrumental in Moriah’s love of music.
Female country singers have been sitting in the back row for a long time. We need artists like Moriah to change that. She certainly picked a great group of country music females to follow. Listing her influences as Carole King, Emmy Lou Harris, Amy Grant and Dolly Parton. It isn’t just other artists that have influenced this young performer. She also gives credit to the environment in which she was raised, out west, as being one of her biggest influences.
Moriah definitely knows what she wants, and has her priorities in order. She moved to Nashville when she was 18, graduated with a Music Degree from Middle Tennessee State University, and continues to make an impression as an artist to watch. We agree, and along with the rest of the music industry – we are watching.
We listened to her music at Reverbnation, and on her web site. We watched some of her videos, too. It’s a good thing we weren’t looking for something not to like about this young lady, because we didn’t find anything. “Winning Me Over,” “Just Let Me Go,” “Lightning Bugs,” all very different, all very good. “Lightning Bugs” is upbeat, fun, sing-along; “After Tonight” is a romantic song, where Moriah tells a story any young girl could be telling. I believe you will all enjoy listening to every one of them. If I had to pick a favorite – I probably couldn’t. But “Winning Me Over” is certainly up near the top of my favorite Moriah Domby songs!
