We got word recently that Adrian Duffy & The Mayo Brothers are about to send us some new music. They have a new album, United We Fall, scheduled for release on May 25, 2015. This is going to be an easy one for Country’s Chatter to review. We have been fans since the the opening notes of “Someone Like You” filled our ears in January of 2014. If you missed the article we did back then, you will want to go back and check it out. It includes the video for the song “Someone Like You”, and if you are anything like us – once you hear it, you will not be able to get that great melody out of your head. You can read that article by clicking here.
We aren’t the first ones in the U.S. to hear about this new album from our friends from Ireland. Robert Oermann has already picked up on it in his MusicRow DISClaimer 04/16, where he wrote: “ADRIAN DUFFY & THE MAYO BROTHERS/United We Fall–The three Duffy brothers from Ireland have been tantalizing me with their excellent singles for a couple of years. Now they have a crowd-funded full album at last. Its title tune is chock full of harmony vocals, ringing guitars and echoey atmosphere. These guys have vocal, songwriting and production chops in abundance.”
While I have heard several of the songs from the new album, I haven’t had an opportunity to sit and listen to it from start to finish. At least not yet. Once that is done, we’ll have more to tell you about it. As you might expect, after hearing what I did, I now have some new songs to add to my list of “Favorite songs by Adrian Duffy & The Mayo Brothers”. The song “Storm Breaking” spent nine weeks on Ireland’s national radio playlist, and was played on U.S. radio as well! I’ve talked about the beautiful harmonies of these brothers before, and that is one thing you will definitely notice in this song. The song tells a story – they all do. This is a story about two people who seem to be trying to figure out where their relationship is headed.
“Having It All”, the first song on the album, is not fast, more of a mid-tempo song, but it sounds sad to me. With lyrics like ‘if loving you was wrong, why’d you melt my heart, I was nothing till you came along…..proud to be by your side’. It just didn’t leave me with that ‘happy, smiling kind of mood’ I get after listening to some of their music. The song is good, but just not one of my personal favorites.
I’m not sure if it was the words, the music, or the vocals, but when United We Fall started, I had to listen. And, I had to pay attention to every word being said. There probably isn’t enough philosopher in me to really tell you what this song is saying. But, it would be interesting to hear what each of you think it is saying after you listen to it. It definitely is thought-provoking. Think about lines like “There’s a rich child with all the medicine it can share, the poor get to keep their cupboards bare, we got the mountains and we got the lakes, they get the canyons and they get the snakes. If it happens, it happens to us all, if it happens, united we fall.”
I also listened to “Push Those Keys”. I hate to say this, but as good as this song is – I believe Adrian Duffy & The Mayo Brothers really have me spoiled. Every song they put out is really good. But, for me, “Someone Like You” will always be the best thing they ever do. Again, that’s just my opinion. Without a doubt, you will all find your favorite song by this great group when you listen to their albums.
The album is ready to pre-order on iTunes. As excited as I am for the new music, I couldn’t be happier to see Someone Like You included on the new album. here are the 10 songs you will get on this great new album.
