When most of us first saw Michael Sarver, he was auditioning for American Idol. He not only made it through his first audition, he made it through Hollywood week, and onto the Idol stage as one of the Top 10 finalists. He took the Hollywood finalist stage with some impressive people – Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, Jasmine Murray – to name a few.
Michael didn’t win that show. Unfortunately, he was eliminated in the first week. But, what he did win was a lot of fans. Michael now has a new album out. The album is called “Begin Again”. It’s not just a title, and it’s not just a song on the album, it seems to be what Michael plans to do. As long as he continues to make music like this, we think he is going to gain many more fans. We also believe he will definitely find his place along side of our top country artists.
You all know that most of us at Country’s Chatter are big fans of the music that comes out of Texas. It looks as if we will continue that trend, as long as we are hearing songs like we’re getting from Michael Sarver. I know traditional country music seems to be a thing of the past. However, those Texas men are coming as close to real country as anyone can. Michael is no exception.
I started listening to his music more than a week ago, when all I had were 30 second clips on his web site. I liked what I was hearing so much, that I almost wrote the review before I ever received the full album. I’m glad, though, that I waited to hear the full songs.
Begin Again is available on iTunes, and was officially released on June 12, at an Album Release Party in Nashville, at BB Kings. Here are the songs you will find on the new album.
I actually found a number of songs that I’m adding to my ‘favorites’ list. And, I liked them all for a different reason. If you put this album on, and listen in order, you are going to wait until the last song to hear “Letting Go”. This is one of my new favorites. The music is slow, it’s not loud, it doesn’t over-shadow the lyric and the story. “It ain’t easy to let go, just cause you want to. I try so hard to just move on, but at times the pain is much too strong, running away seems to be the only answer. Then I have moments when the past feels gone, and my heart is ready to carry on, why is letting go so hard to do.” As real and honest as those words may be, reading them definitely doesn’t do the song justice. You have to listen to it.
One that quickly became a favorite of everyone here at Country’s Chatter was the title track, “Begin Again”. It’s another slow, song. It has a romantic story to tell. It’s about love, love ending, love starting up again, not giving up, beginning again. It’s worth it. Not go give up on our love. We’ve all lived through it. Michael sings about it. We think it’s great.
There are a few songs that definitely show a rock influence, like “Like to Like You” with its electric guitar painting the picture of a rock group on stage getting the party going. Even in that song, Michael’s vocals are what grab your attention as much as the guitar and rock sound. Knowing what a fan of traditional country music I am, it won’t surprise any of our readers that this was not my favorite song on the album. But, that’s okayThere was definitely a lot more to this album than that one song. And, there are a lot of people out there who are going to love this song.
“When I Drink” – need I say more? that’s the title of one of the songs. This one is just plain country music. Nothing ever matters as much, when I drink. You know this one came out of Texas. You can see it being played in a club, with people dancing, singing along, (which they do in the song) and, oh yes, and probably sharing a beer or two.
I won’t try to tell you about every song on the album, but I will say this — There is a lot to like about this album. There is not a lot you won’t like! I’m not sure how Michael Sarver has been flying under our radar for the past six years, but we are glad he is now in our sights. We will surely be doing more on Michael in the future, and we hope all of you will keep an eye on his show dates, new releases and videos.
