Her name is Sam Hatmaker, however, I didn’t have to listen to this young lady long before I wanted to change her name to Sam Musicmaker. We’ve all heard it said that big things come in small packages, here is your proof. Sam is the best combination of country/rock, country/soul, country/pop, and just plain country that I have heard in a long time. I went to Spotify to listen to some of her music, and got stuck on “You Got Me”. I can’t tell you how many times I listened to it. Okay, I’ll admit it – we listened to a “Southern Soul” more than once, too.
She has a CD available at CD Baby and iTunes. The songs on that album are Southern Soul, Country Girl’s Love, Everything Works Out, Fall So Fast and You Got Me. The ‘recommended if you like’ area says –if you like Miranda Lambert, Reba, or The Band Perry, you are going to like Sam. We agree. She doesn’t seem to have a web site right now, so were glad to learn things about Sam from the CD Baby page, as well as her Facebook page. We found out that she is from Knoxville, Tenn., has been writing songs since she was 8 years old, and that she has performed at Dollywood, at the Dogwood Arts Festival in Knoxville, and at the Concert on the Square. I’m sure that is just a few of the many places this young lady has done live shows.
But, I better back up here and start a the beginning.
On Saturday, Sept. 26, I passed through Unicoi, Tenn. I was actually headed somewhere, but made a stop at the Buffalo Valley Music Festival. There were five stages set up at the Farmhouse Gallery and Gardens in Unicoi that day. The first small stage I reached was occupied by a pretty blond and her guitar. I watched her for a few minutes, and I listened. and then, I turned on Periscope, so I could share this talent with the world.
Her voice had a bit of a rasp, not unfamiliar to anyone who has ever listened to Bonnie Raitt. But, that was just during the first song she was doing when I arrived. After that, I discovered how much versatility there is in Sam Hatmaker. Her vocals, while always powerful, and always entertaining, did somehow change from song to song. Not something every artist can do. And, she played guitar, doing a great job accompanying herself to each song she sang for her audience. The way she presented herself on stage, and the fact that she was so comfortable working in front of a live audience told me she has done this before.
We’ve got a video here for you from 2013, it is a live performance of Sam’s song “Southern Soul”. Hope you will all go and check out all of her music, and let me know what you think of this young lady. She is a very talented singer/songwriter, and we expect to hear a lot of great things from her in the near future.
When you have a second, visit Sam’s Facebook page, and please remember to “Like” it while you are there. You can follow her on Twitter @samhatmaker.
