Most of the time when I get a single or an album in to review, it is either from a new artist none of us have ever heard of before; or, it is from an established artist that everyone knows. But every now and then, the single I get to review is from an artist I don’t know, but a lot of other people do. That is what happened today.
I received a CD in the mail. The artist is Mike Smith. I had no idea who he was. I was telling a friend on the phone that I was about to listen to this new single, “Little Bit of Us,” by Mike Smith. Her response was, “you mean the songwriter? I didn’t know he sang”. She informed me that she was familiar with his work, and was aware of the fact that he had co-written a number of songs that were taken into the Top Ten by major artists. Maybe I am one of the few who didn’t know Mike Smith is a successful songwriter. But, I’m glad I know who he is now.
In the press release I received with the CD, I also learned that he is a very talented musician, playing many instruments; and, he’s a producer, having co-produced his new single with Gilby Clarke of Guns N’ Roses and the Avila Brothers. He co-wrote 10 Billboard Top 10 songs. His many musical influences include artists like Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce and Jimi Hendrix.
I listened to ‘Little Bit of Us” several times while I was writing. The song has a catchy melody. It’s the kind or music that makes you smile when you hear it. The lyrics are memorable. The story is every day! It has things that every one of us can identify with. It’s work. It’s what we all do. And, it’s love. It’s having someone in your life that makes getting through anything, and any day, and any job a little bit easier.
“Little Bit of Us” is not old-school country music. But, we older country music fans realize that very little of what we are hearing on the radio these days comes close to what we could call ‘real country’. This song is, however, exactly what we are hearing the radio these days. A little more of the country/pop sound that found its way to country radio and decided to stay. “A Little Bit of Us” would feel right at home on any Top 40 Country Radio playlist.
“I’m wide open musically and lyrically, and I enjoy creating a clever turn of a phrase to encapsulate a complicated feeling. I like that my creative side is not locked into a certain style, like it has to be preserved in a glass case not to be broken. As God and fate would have it, I’ve been blessed and humbled that my tunes took a crazy left turn to attract recording artists in various genres. But the country music format – the music composition, the melodies, the storylines – is where my heart is. “Country” brings me home,” Mike said.
The song was added exclusively to Spotify on April 8, and the video premiered on Taste of Country that same day. We have the video to share with all of you now, and would love to know what you think of t his song. Her is Mike Smith, with his debut single, “Little Bit of Us.”
