Have you ever wondered what an entertainer thinks the moment before he walks out on stage. You know the moment I mean. I’m talking about that moment when the artist looks out at his audience, from the back stage and finds himself staring at a crowd made up of … well, of everyone! Toddlers in the arms of their parents, pre-teens, teens, parents and grandparents – all there to see your show. That’s the moment I would guess the artist would be saying, “What am I going to do now”? With Dan + Shay, I think their only thought was, “We got this covered.” And, they did.
From start to finish, Dan + Shay, along with their very talented band, entertained the crowd. It wasn’t just a great concert, it was a musical light and sound show. They came out with “All Nighter,” everyone was on their feet! Videos were playing on the huge screens behind them, lights were flashing, everything they did made the show great for the fans. All that just added to the excitement and fun of this well-put together production.
If any of the people in the audience haven’t yet heard the new album, “Obsessed”, they got to hear quite a bit of it tonight. “Round The Clock,” “Lipstick,” “From the Ground Up,” “Already Ready,” and “How Not To” were all part of tonight’s show. For those of us who remember Tom Petty and Bon Jovi, Dan + Shay gave us a little of “Free Fallin’,” and “You Give Love a Bad Name”. The audience was singing along. and, they were not just singing along to the older songs! they were right there with the guys on songs like “19 You + Me” and “Nothin’ Like You”. And of course, everyone in the audience knew every word to their current No. 1 single “From the Ground Up”. (I think we all sang it very well, too).
When an artist is comfortable enough to lose the band for a while and do a rather lengthy acoustic set, you know you have real talent on the stage. Dan + Shay did just that. But we can’t ignore the extremely talented group of musicians they had on the stage with them. Andrew Cook, drums; Dustin Hook, bass; Justin Richards, guitar; and Izaac Burkhart, guitar, all added to what could not have been a better opening night at our 2016 Appalachian Fair.
Here at Country’s Chatter, we need to thank Evan (the merch guy) for spending so much time with us. Evan provided the names of the band members, because I never seem to be able to catch that when they are announced from the stage. Many thanks to Chase, the tour manager, who had everything set up so well tonight. The Meet & Greet went smoothly, the pre-show, on-air interview with Marc Tragler and WXBQ radio was fun to watch. If there is such a thing as a perfect opening night for any event – this was it.
I’m going to close out with a few more pictures from tonight’s show. I hope all of you have an opportunity to see Dan + Shay on stage sometime soon! Of course the fair would not be complete without our WXBQ Rabbit, so we’ll include a shot of him on stage as well….. for those of you not at our fair tonight, here is a look at what you missed.
