The Santa Train will make its 74th run from Pikeville, Ky., to Kingsport, Tenn., on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. Every year, a special celebrity guest boards the train with hundreds of volunteers to deliver Christmas gifts to children throughout the coal region of Kentucky and Virginia, ending in Northeast Tennessee where more toys are tossed to the waiting crowd. This year, the guest will be country singer, Darryl Worley.
Over the past several years, Country’s Chatter has either been onboard the train for the journey, or met it at the end of its run to help with the celebration, and provide an article and photos for all of our readers. Recently, we’ve had Meghan Linsey, Amy Grant, Kree Harrison, Thompson Square, Wynonna Judd, and another year, she was joined by her mother Naomi.
This event is a year in the making, with planning for the next run beginning as soon as the train gets into the Kingsport station. Sponsored by the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, CSX Railroad, Food City and Dignity U Wear Foundation, the success of this event depends on the hard work and countless hours put in by thousands of volunteers every year.
The train will make 14 stops along a 110-mile route. And every stop has a large crowd of children and adults waiting for Santa’s arrival. The celebrity guest will also get off the train at some of the stops to help distribute toys, and at other stops, will join Santa to toss soft toys and stuffed animals from the platform at the back of the train.
Donated gifts are divided into age groups, with separate bags or backpacks filled with toys for the boys and girls along the route. When the volunteers get off, they know the color of the bags they are carrying indicates whether they are to be handed to a boy or a girl, and the appropriate age of the child. Wrapping paper rolls are given to adults; and snack foods are also given as treats along the way.

If this doesn’t get you in the Christmas sprit, I can’t begin to imagine what will.
