Dustin Collins is one of many up-and-coming country artists that we think is worth more than a mention. He’s not exactly new to the music industry, This one has been working with his music and entertaining folks all over the southeastern US for more than 10 years. He’s making friends, growing his fan base, and getting a lot of attention from media and radio folks.
Gator Glass at105.5 Big Cat Country said, “Dustin Collins is raw and rare. “She Does” is a gritty, powerful song delivered in a way that only Dustin Collins can!” We agree. They melody and the lyric are not unfamiliar. The song is new, nothing you’ve heard before, and yet it will instantly remind you of what you are already hearing on country radio today. It’s clear that is where the song belongs.
“She Does” just might be the song that brings Dustin’s decade long journey to a very successful ‘next step. The song is off to a great start, having already landed on several major industry charts, including a Top 50 debut on iTunes country Music Chart. And, he has been in the No. 1 spot on cmt.com a very impressive 10 times in his music career!
Dustin was born in Georgia, but his family moved to Kentucky when he was very young. he grew up in a small farming community, which is also famous for being the home of bourbon whiskey. “My step father and uncle played country music, and rock and roll, which heavily influenced me, early on,” Dustin told us. “We would all play music around the kitchen table, campfire or pretty much anywhere we could,” he said. He told us he grew up hearing stuff like Hank Williams Jr., Arlo Guthrie, Waylon Jennings and even ZZ Top and Tin Lizzie. “I liked songs like Honkey Tonk Heroes and jail Break. But, being a child of the 90s my favorites will and biggest influences will always be Brooks and Dunn, Garth and George Strait.,” Dustin said.
Dustin told us he started writing at 14 and continued playing. At first it was nothing real serious. He played more as something to do out of small town boredom. “In my 20s, I really decided to ‘go for it’ — Moving to Nashville, playing writers nights on pretty much any stage I could get on, spent time writing as many songs as I could and learning how to sing,” he said. “I cut my first real record with a friend of mine Eric Mellencamp who is the nephew of John Cougar Mellencamp and a former Curb Records promo guy,” he continued. “Eric’s always been a good friend and help me learn the business to a certain degree and help me put out my first record on his Nashville based indie label Rocket tone Records,” Dustin wrote on the record, as well as having some cuts from great writers like Steve Bogard, who wrote “Every Mile a Memory”.
He considers “She Does” a personal success. “When we started, I really didn’t have a fan base and had never really had any true studio experience. We debuted the She Does in June of 2016 at number 42 on the iTunes country albums chart and charting the single on a few radio shows including the Iceman’s Top 40 new country countdown at number 4.” Dustin said.
His single, “Cold Dead Hands” is not one of my favorites, but I believe it will become a quick favorite for our country folks who are not only ‘hunting/gun enthusiasts’ – and for anyone who wants music that reminds them of Hank Jr., and older/outlaw country music. There’s definitely nothing wrong with this song. I just like a lot of Dustin’s other music better. While the song may not be one of my favorites, it certainly shows a lot of Dustin’s versatility. “She Does,” “Straight Up”, “Cold Dead Hands” – all uniquely different, and at the same time, they remain Dustin Collins songs. He has his own style and his own vocals, and you will know who is singing ever time one of his songs hits the radio.
