One of the most impactful and socially conscious voices in contemporary music, Rissi Palmer, has released her new song, “Old Black Southern Woman,” available now through Invasion Merch on all digital streaming platforms. The deeply personal track, written by Palmer and Kyshona Armstrong and produced by Shannon Sanders, marks the first single from Palmer’s upcoming PERSPECTIVES EP, set to release in early 2026.
“Old Black Southern Woman” reflects Palmer’s poignant thoughts on the wisdom, strength, and resilience of Black Southern women, and her own personal journey. In reflecting on the song’s themes, Palmer shares, “As I get older, I think about what a privilege it is to get old. My mother died at 38 and never got to see her only child grow up, meet her grandchildren, or see herself evolve. I often think about what kind of woman she would have been.”
She continues, “I also thought about the village of wise women who have loved me, raised me, and mentored me, including my incredible mother and grandmothers. All this has greatly changed and influenced my life, and this song is a promise of who I want to be—for my mothers, my daughters, my village, and myself.”

The song’s striking message is accompanied by a powerful music video, directed by Caleb Childers, who previously worked with Palmer on her “Summerville” video. The visual for “Old Black Southern Woman” celebrates the rich heritage of Black Southern women, weaving together generations of wisdom, love, and strength.
“From the beginning, Caleb and I both knew this video wasn’t about me. It was about honoring the women who shaped me, and the roots that shaped so many of us,” explains Palmer. “It was very important to me to bridge generations in this piece, which is why I wanted my daughters to be part of it.”
Palmer adds, “One of my favorite parts of this process was inviting others to join me in honoring the women who came before us. When I put out a call for photos, I was overwhelmed by the response. So many beautiful, touching images came in—far more than we could fit in the final video. We were intentional about treating each one with the care and reverence it deserves. Since we couldn’t include them all, we’ll be sharing the rest on my socials in the coming days to make sure every woman is seen and celebrated.”
