The Stecoah Valley Center will welcome the award-winning Appalachian Roadshow for their Christmas concert, An Authentic Appalachian Christmas,’ on December 13 at 7:30 p.m. This performance comes with a unique twist for the Stecoah stage – band frontman Barry Abernathy has personally rented the Lynn L. Shields Auditorium and is self-producing the event.

Abernathy, like many musicians, has a deep affection for the historic schoolhouse auditorium. Built in 1926, the nearly 100-year-old venue hosted legendary artists including Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, and Doc Watson.

Reflecting on the significance of the space, Abernathy says, “The way it looks and smells just takes you back to another time. In the last 20 years, it’s the only venue I’ve played that still feels like that. You really want to see places like that thrive, and you can tell there’s a lot of passion for the local culture at Stecoah.”

The last few years have been challenging for arts organizations and small venues like the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center. Few musicians are willing to shoulder financial risk to keep the doors open but Abernathy is doing it because Appalachian Roadshow and Stecoah share a mission – preserving and promoting Southern Appalachian culture and live music.

“What does it take to keep the stage lights on?” Abernathy asks. “A performer, a venue, and an audience. If any of those three go down, the others go with it. If you love it and you want to see it keep going, support live music.”

That’s exactly what he hopes to see on Saturday, December 13th – a community coming together to support both Stecoah and the band. Before the concert, Appalachian Roadshow invites guests to enjoy an old-fashioned supper with the band in the Schoolhouse Café. Supper begins at 6:00 p.m. and is available with a minimum donation of $25 per plate, with all proceeds benefiting the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center.
