For the first time in their 30-year career, award-winning country rock act Little Texas performed at the largest and oldest competitive hot air balloon event in the Lone Star State. The Great Texas Balloon Race takes place annually in Longview, hometown to two of the group’s founding members, Porter Howell and Duane Propes. This past Saturday, more than 5,000 fans at the Longview Convention Complex were treated to a spectacular show featuring surprise special guests the Kilgore College Rangerettes joining the band on stage for a blazing routine to “God Blessed Texas.”

“When I was growing up in Longview, the Kilgore College Rangerettes were as well known as the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders,” Howell remembers. “Having them perform during our recent Great Texas Balloon Race show was awesome! There is nothing like feeling the air from a white boot whizzing near your head while singing and playing for over five thousand people!”

“The Kilgore College Rangerettes loved having the opportunity to ‘Kick a Little’ [a playful reference to another Little Texas chart-topper] with Little Texas as they performed one of our favorite songs,” says Dana Blair, director of the Rangerettes.

First organized in 1940, the Rangerettes have become the world’s best-known collegiate drill team, traveling from coast to coast and border to border in the United States, as well as on several world tours.

“God Blessed Texas,” written by Howell and former Little Texas member Brady Seals, is often referred to as the second Texas State Anthem. The band’s signature song has been played at every sporting event in the state and at the entrance to the Texas State Fair.

About Little Texas  Thirty years ago, a Nashville band with a country rock sound was lighting up the charts with songs written, recorded, and performed exclusively by the members themselves. With their debut album, First Time for Everything, Little Texas burst onto the scene with five top 20 hits. Nearly 3,000 shows and 8 albums later (with over 7 million units sold), it’s easy to understand why the group earned the moniker “Hardest Working Band in Country Music,” and became one of the top vocal bands in the business. Little Texas racked up 11 top 20 singles (with 3 Top 10s and 3 No. 1s) and received multiple Grammy, CMA and ACM nominations, winning the ACM for Top Vocal Group in 1994.

Little Texas has continued to tour constantly and released an independent studio album in 2015, Young for a Long Time. The group consists of original band members Porter Howell (lead guitar and lead vocals), Dwayne O’Brien (rhythm guitar and vocals), Duane Propes (bass and vocals) and drummer Del GrayIn 2022, Little Texas are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their debut album, First Time For Everything.
