Derek 7Today, we would like to introduce you all to Derek Norsworthy.  Over the past 12 years, we have posted many articles about new artists. Often it is because the artist found us, via Twitter or Facebook. Many times, the public relations folks or management team contacted us about their artist.  And, sometimes, like this time, a fan of the artist brought them to our attention.

We always call them a NEW country artist.  And, while that means they are new to Country’s Chatter, it doesnt’ always mean they are brand new, straight out of the package, and no one has ever heard of them. With an ever-growing fan base, we might be the only ones not familiar with Derek Norsworthy.

Derek Norsworthy with his No. 1 Fan, Hannah

The Derek Norsworthy Band has been around for a while now.  And, I really think I need to share a little about the fan who brought him to my attention.  Her name is Hannah.  It was actually Hannah’s mother,  Donna, who contacted me, telling me that, Hannah, who has Down Syndrome, has been a huge Derek Norsworthy fan, since she first saw him, six years ago.  Hannah got to meet Derek at that first show, and her mother tells me that they family considers Derek a friend.  “I have driven as far away as Baton Rouge, LA to take Hannah to see Derek’s band play, all because it truly brings her that much happiness,” Donna told us.  “So while I certainly don’t want the article to turn to be a Hannah article, it truly is because of Hannah that I have come to have so much admiration and respect for Derek,” she said.

The bio on Derek’s Facebook page tells us this southern Missisippi native grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Charlie Daniels and Van Halen.  He tells fans, “Dad had this old blue cassette box that had an assortment of rock and country tapes in there, and I remember knowing at that point I wanted to be like the guys on the tapes.”

He was 15 years old when he started a band.  With no designated singer at that point, his bio says, Derek grabbed the mic for the first time. “I had been writing songs for a couple years at that point, so it kind of felt right to learn to sing them in the band,” said Derek. The band stayed together through high school, recording two albums, playing shows, and building a local following. After graduation the band split up. “By this point I was completely ate up with playing music, and I knew it was what I was meant to do. I pieced a band back together, started playing regional college towns, frat parties, and opening for a number of national acts,” said Norsworthy. He did this all while going to college for a nursing degree. Despite doubts from his professors Norsworthy worked hard, stayed focused, graduated, and became a certified RN.
