I need to start this by reintroducing you all to Wes Holtsclaw. Our longtime readers might remember us telling you about a group called The Twang Bangers. Wes is the lead singer. The Twang Bangers performed on the same stage as Joe during the Racks by the Tracks festival in Kingsport, Tenn., in 2014. You can learn more about that group by checking out one of othe articles here. (Visit The Twang Bangers Facebook page, and follow them on Twitter @TwangBangers.)
The photo above of Wes and Joe was takien in Las Vegas. When we spoke to Wes tonight, he made the following statement.
“One of the biggest parts of my childhood was constant music videos on CMT and TNN, and listening to WXBQ every time my family and I got into our vehicle. Joe Diffie was one of those instrumental voices that helped shape my love for country music. I sang because of artist like Joe, Garth Brooks and Keith Whitley. I was fortunate to meet Joe in late 2013 and had a wonderful chat with him in Las Vegas. Fast forward five months later and our band, The Twang Bangers, were privileged to share a spot on the same Racks by the Tracks bill. That day was the last time I spoke with him, but he was always kind and jovial and everything you’d want one of your music heroes to be. For many of us 1990’s kids, as I’m sure Kenny Rogers’ passing for the 1980’s kids just one week ago, this was a gut punch. I’ll always appreciate Joe Diffie’s music and can’t wait to sing John Deere Green loud and proud at our next show!”
Wes is also a personal friend of the folks here at Country’s Chatter. And, when we he chose to honor Joe Diffie in song, we wanted to share it with you. Here is Wes Holtsclaw, singing one of Joe’s hits, “So Help Me Girl”.
