Acclaimed singer-songwriter Tenille Townes returns with “Enabling,” a quietly devastating new song that confronts the emotional cost of loving someone at the expense of yourself. The new track was self-produced and solely written by Townes. Long admired for her ability to translate deeply personal experiences into songs that feel intimate yet universal, Townes continues to carve out space for reflection, honesty, and emotional truth.
On the powerful new track Townes said: “This song is me confronting a lifelong habit of putting others’ needs above my own. Writing it helped me realize that love isn’t self-sacrifice… sometimes the most loving thing you can do is stand your ground and choose yourself.
Enabling came from realizing how often I’d lost myself trying to rescue the people I loved. I spent so much of my life reading the room, changing myself to keep everyone happy, and avoiding my own feelings in the process. This song is the moment I finally saw that pattern clearly and chose to set boundaries: to love others without abandoning myself.”
Written after an attempted apology from someone she loved, “Enabling” explores the instinct to step in, smooth things over, and confuse endurance with devotion. With striking clarity, Townes turns the focus inward, recognizing how people-pleasing and emotional rescue can become a form of self-abandonment. “Choosing love ain’t love, unless the choosing is free,” she sings, distilling the song’s central reckoning with devastating simplicity.
Rather than assigning blame, “Enabling” is rooted in self-awareness and resolve. It captures the moment when empathy collides with self-preservation, and when boundaries stop feeling like distance and begin to resemble care. The song’s power lies in its restraint, allowing unresolved tension, vulnerability, and quiet strength to coexist without forcing closure.
Musically, “Enabling” is intentionally unadorned and emotionally direct. The arrangement of raw instrumentation, acoustic guitar, mandolin (all performed by Townes) and sparse production leaves room for breath and stillness, placing the focus squarely on the powerful vocals and lyrics themselves along with the weight of what is being said. The result feels less like a performance and more like a confession, inviting listeners into a private moment of reckoning. By writing, producing, and performing the track herself, Townes invites listeners into her most unguarded reflections yet.
That commitment to emotional honesty has defined Townes’ career from the beginning. The Canada-born, Nashville-based artist has earned two JUNO Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and 17 Canadian Country Music Association Awards, while touring alongside artists such as Stevie Nicks, Miranda Lambert, Shania Twain, Keith Urban, Reba, Zac Brown Band, George Strait, and Dierks Bentley. Across every chapter, she has built a devoted global audience drawn to her empathy, lyrical precision, and willingness to sit with difficult truths.
With “Enabling,” Tenille Townes steps forward with renewed clarity, embracing vulnerability and honoring the courage it takes to stop rescuing others and begin choosing yourself. The track marks a clear shift toward a more intimate, singer-songwriter, folk-leaning sound- one that strips everything back to lyric, melody and emotional truth.
Coming up this month Townes will be headed off on the road with two dates in Texas joining Muscadine Bloodline and March 18th she will be headed off on her Canadian tour. The eleven run tour will take her across the country and will see her performing not only “Enabling” and all of the songs fans have come to know and love.
Be on the lookout for more from Townes as the new song marks the beginning of a new era and serves as the first glimpse into a larger body of work and more tour dates to be announced soon.
