Last year we saw Joe Diffie at the Washington County Fair – in a downpour. He tried his best to give us a good show, but unfortunately, Mother Nature won out and the show ended far too early. It was obvious that Joe really wanted to continue. But you can’t take chances with electronics and water. So it all came to an end. On Sunday night (9/9/18), Joe was back in our area. So was the rain. Fortunately, it wasn’t as bad as last year, and he only had to fight the raindrops for a song or two, during his appearance at the Tennessee Valley Fair in Knoxville, Tenn. The problem this time wasn’t really Mother Nature, it was the fact that Joe was battling a cold. His voice was leaving him, but he didn’t want to let the fans down. He’s an awesome performer. Fans were there to hear his music, and he was going to give it to them.
The band helped out with vocals when Joe’s voice just wouldn’t. And, with an audience full of long-time Joe Diffie fans, they were singing right along with the band. Joe’s band members enjoy what they are doing, and they are fun to watch. They weren’t jsut playing and singing, they were helping Joe put on a show. Those awesome musicians were Michael Grando, drums; Ger Hoffman, bass; William Bagby, guitar, Randy Beavers, steel; and Kevin Adams, keyboards.
The concert started with “Third Rock From the Sun.” “Next Thing Smokin’,” and one of my favorites, “C-O-U-N-T-R-Y,” He ended up with “John Deere Green,” “Honky Tonk Attitude,” and “Bigger Than the Beatles.” In the middle we heard 15 more Joe Diffie hits…including everyone’s favorites, “If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets), ” “Is It Cold in Here,” and “Ships That Don’t Come In”. The audience loves Joe’s music, and when he sang “Pick Up Man,” and “Prop me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die),” there was no question about that.
